Iceland, astride a rift in the earth, has a harsh landscape resulting from volcanic and geothermal activity, softened by mossy green mountains, and tremendous waterfalls. Glaciers give way to pastures where shaggy Icelandic ponies and sheep graze. Fishing boats moor in the harbours, while tourists visit puffin colonies and historic Thingvellir assembly place.
