Caressed by clouds, the mountains of the Southern Alps cut a spectacular silhouette against the sky as they stretch along the South Island's western boundary. These rugged crags and peaks, including Aoraki / Mt Cook, Mt Tasman, Mt Aspiring, and Mt Tutoko overlook glacial lakes, ancient forests, greenstone rivers, blue-ice glaciers and wide alluvial valleys. A World Heritage Area (Te Wahipounamu) recognises the southern section as an area of outstanding natural beauty, in which Hedgehog House photographers have been delighted to trek and climb.
