The Bay of Islands has many historically significant sites, including Waitangi where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed, the Stone Store at Kerikeri, and the township of Russell. The region's northernmost tip is Cape Reinga, while to the west is Ninety-Mile Beach (known for fishing, and sand dune surfing), and the Hokianga and Kaipara Harbours. On the east lovely sandy bays are enjoyed by holiday makers, with snorkelling and diving to view marine life popular at the offshore islands. Inland huge kauri trees can still be found in Waipoua forest
