This is NZ's volcanic region, including the mountains of Ruapehu (last eruption 1996), Ngauruhoe and Tongariro which are designated a World Heritage Area. Geysers and other geothermal features are found in several locations and at Wairakei electricity is generated from the heated steam. Many lakes dot the region, chief of which is Lake Taupo, a prime trout fishery. The Waikato River flows out of the lake over the spectacular Huka Falls. Skiers flock to Whakapapa and Turoa fields in winter, trekkers walk the Tongariro Crossing in summer, tourists pause at The Chateau , travel the Desert Road, visit the Army Museum at Waiouru, or hope to glimpse the wild horses grazing in the Kaimanawa Ranges.
