Colin Monteath and the New Zealand mountain guide Gary Ball climbed Pik kommunizma , 7500 metres, the highest peak in the Pamir mountains in what was the Soviet Union. It was once called Pik Stalin but now that the Pamirs is part of Tajikistan the peak has been renamed Peak Ismail Samani.
