In 2002, based from the township of Talkeentna, Colin Monteath was a member of a four person New Zealand expedition that completed a 29 day ski traverse of Denali (Mt McKinley)in Alaska, the highest summit in North America. Starting below Little Switzerland on the lower Kahiltna glacier the skiers made their way up the standard route on Denali, sometimes double hauling their sled-loads. After reaching the 6100 metre summit of this Arctic peak the descent was made down Cartensz Ridge to the heavily crevassed Muldrow glacier, exiting to the tundra over McGonigall pass.
