Tibet - Kailas & Gurla Mandhata - Colin Monteath

After a trek from Simikot in Nepal, Colin Monteath and fellow New Zealand expedition members completed a kora of Mt Kailas in south central Tibet. Considered the centre of the universe, Kailas is scared to Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and the ancient Tibetan religion Bon-Po. Kailas lies close to the sacred lakes Manosarovar and Rakas tal. Nearby, are the sources of four major rivers of Asia - The Indus, Sutlej, Karnali and TsangPo(Bramaputra) . After the kora, the climbers attempted 7700 metre Gurla Mandhata, the second highest peak completely in Tibet, turning back some 150 metres from the summit in extreme cold deep snow.
